During the fifth year of the program, students complete their research and progress to their final dissertation defense. The dissertation resulting from the student's graduate research must represent significant contribution to knowledge in chemistry. Its importance should be sufficient to warrant the acceptance for publication of a paper based upon it by one of the respected journals of chemistry or a related scientific area.
Divisional requirements and timelines for the final oral examination are listed in the Chemistry Graduate Program Handbook and Graduate School requirements are listed in the Graduate School Handbook, but students should note that the process takes many weeks to complete and should plan accordingly.
