Prof. Julia Zaikina, Iowa State University
Seminar Title: Hard-to-make solids from unconventional synthetic routes

Prof. Julia V. Zaikina received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry from Moscow State University, Russia. She obtained her Ph.D. degree performing a joint research project between Moscow State University (advisor: Prof. A. Shevelkov) and Max-Plank-Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids, Dresden, Germany (advisor: Prof. J. Grin). Afterward, Julia did her first postdoctoral stint at Florida State University in the group of Prof. Susan Latturner, and then joined the groups of Prof. Susan Kauzlarich and Prof. Alexandra Navrotsky at UC Davis for the second postdoctoral stint. Julia joined the faculty at Iowa State as an Assistant Professor in August 2017, and was promoted to Associate Professor in July 2023. Her research interests lie in the area of inorganic and materials chemistry; particularly she is interested in non-conventional synthesis routes to complex solids and understanding of their atomic and electronic structure with the goal of creating new functional materials that address current scientific challenges in sustainable energy. She is a recipient of NSF CAREER award and 2021 Margaret C. Etter Early Career Award from the American Crystallographic Association (ACA).
