Dr. Andrea Russell - Special Seminar
Dr. Andrea Russell, University of Southampton, United KingdomSeminar Title: "X-ray spectroscopic studies of electrocatalysts"Host: Anne Co, co.5@osu.edu Abstract:The further development and discovery of new electrocatalysts requires detailed understanding of structure/property relationships. Whilst ex situ characterisation techniques such as TEM and powder XRD can provide a baseline understanding, increasingly there is a desire to understand the structure of such materials under in situ or operando conditions. Where in situ refers to characterisation under electrochemical control and operando to characterisation under conditions that more closely approach the operating conditions of the electrocatalyst or battery material. In this seminar a number of examples of the use of X-ray spectroscopies (XANES, EXAFS, and XES) to characterise both electrocatalysts and battery materials will be presented. Emphasis will be placed on the design of the electrochemical cell to ensure full utilisation of the electrocatalyst. Examples will include LaxCo3-xO3 perovskites for oxygen reduction and and Ir oxide electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution.
