My
research is focused on investigating the effect of the matrix (MA)
domain of Gag protein on the RNA packaging. The RNA packaging process
for retroviruses involves a recognition event of viral RNA by the viral
Gag protein. The mechanism of this process is thought to involve an
interaction between the nucleocapsid (NC) domain of Gag protein and RNA
packaging signal. It was shown that both the MA and NC domains of
bovine leukemia virus (BLV), a member of deltaretroviruses, of Gag are
determinants of RNA packaging in vivo (Wang et al. 2003), and two
stem-loop (SL) regions of RNA packaging signal sequence were determined
(Mansky et al. 2002). My work is focused on the mechanism of the
interaction between the MA and the two SL regions in vitro to probe the
proposed binding activities of MA domain.
