PURPOSE

Each of our colleges and universities within Ohio has undertaken projects to improve undergraduate education, with funding from federal agencies or private foundations. The Ohio Project brings together faculty from Ohio's colleges and universities to discuss these projects and to disseminate the benefits to all of our campuses.

In carrying out this project, we are following the recommendations of the NSF report Shaping the Future: New Expectations for Undergraduate Education (NSF 96-139), published in 1996. Under the auspices of the National Science Foundation, a distinguished committee conducted an intensive review of the state of undergraduate science education in America. One of the committee's recommendations to state governments and higher education boards forms the basis for The Ohio Project:

"Ensure that funding formulas and state policies provide incentives and rewards for excellent undergraduate education; and encourage collaboration among institutions."
