The Milnoid Home Page-Copper.Net, cheap, no nonsense Internet

Internet Service Provider Recommendation

I would like to recommend Copper.Net as a cheap, no-nonsense ISP.

Good things

They're $99/year (comes out to $8.25/month) if you want to pay for a year up-front, and $9.95/month if you want to go month-to-month.

They have a 30-day money-back guarantee.

They support 56K connections.

They just joined a nationwide dial-up network, so even though their business has been based in major Ohio cities (Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati and some others) for the past few years, you can use them even if you live clear out in California or something, or in a few Canadian cities, and have a local dialup number. (NOTE: CHECK their dial-up numbers first to make sure there's a local dial-up number to where you live, and want to use it from, before signing up for this.)

Their connection (at least in Columbus) even can handle DSL access, for the same price, but they offer no technical support on this as there are several spots in the chain where this can fail to work, including things not within their control.  (You would have to pay to have your phone line set up for DSL and I presume something extra to the phone company per month, etc.)

They DON'T FORCE YOU TO LOOK AT ANY ADS! By the way AOL users, I've heard you can shut off most or all their ads if you call them and ask how! That's the least they can do for the $21.95 or so per month they charge you! Or you could go with Copper.Net, see no ads, and pay a whole lot less too.

They have a web-based interface for you to check your e-mail.

Bad things (and ways around them):

It only includes one e-mail account. If you have more than one person in your household wanting their own e-mail accounts, perhaps all but one could get free web-based e-mail from such providers as Hotmail or Yahoo. If you have an e-mail account through your work, depending on what kind it is, and if your work will let you use it for non-work, there's a good chance you can pull your work e-mail in through Copper.net, or access it through your work's web-based interface (if they have such a thing).

They don't provide much in the way of technical support. Their setup is very automated. It's pretty easy though. If you live in the Columbus area I'll come over if you want and do it in probably 10 minutes or so, Lord willing.

You don't get any webspace. Most of you probably don't care about that. You can get free webspace, if you don't mind being forced to have some ads on your site, from Yahoo, GeoCities, or some other providers anyway.

They don't provide built-in chat, but you can get at least four chat services I know of for free: AOL Instant Messenger (over 50 million users), ICQ, MSN Messenger (also called Windows Messenger), and Yahoo Messenger. (I don't recommend ICQ anymore because it's really hard to block out undesireable garbage from people you don't know and don't want to know, especially if you're a God-fearing person.)

Basically, they're really good at providing reliable, cheap service, but you don't get a lot of frills. But You can get a lot of those frills free from someone else anyway.

Do I make any money off this? - Well, if you sign up and enter the promotional code of 335414 (or click on the link below and the code will automatically be sent), I get a small amount of cash off of this, and you pay the same thing you would anyway! So if you'd like to help me a little, I'd appreciate it. If not, I'd still recommend the service highly.
