The William Lloyd Evans Lectures
Each year the Department of Chemistry at The Ohio State
University hosts the Evans Award Lecture in recognition of Professor
William Lloyd Evans' distinguished service to the department.
The 2003 Evans Lecturer is Professor Tobin Marks of
Northwestern University.
Tobin Marks is Professor of Chemistry as well as Materials Science and
Engineering at Northwestern University. He holds both the Morrison
Chair in Chemistry and the Ipatieff Chair in Catalytic Chemistry. He is
known for creativity, breadth and diversity in his research. His research
interests span organometallic chemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, materials
chemistry, and metal organic chemical vapor deposition. He is a pioneer in
the area of using lanthanides and actinides in organometallic chemistry,
particularly with regard to using such molecules as catalysts. He also
works with early transition metal complexes and main group reagents
for generating highly electrophilic polymerization catalysts. His
interdisciplinary efforts in materials chemistry are also diverse,
covering several interesting areas including: thin film photonic
materials for frequency doubling and high-speed data transmission, self
assembling electroluminescent materials for organic LED's, electronically
functional molecular materials, and electroceramics (ferroelectrics,
dielectrics, etc.). His group has made significant contributions in
the area of developing molecular precursors for metal-organic chemical
vapor deposition of such materials. In each area, chemical synthesis
is closely linked to a broad array of techniques to elucidate structure,
reaction mechanism, and bonding.
Professor Marks has been recognized for his work in a striking number
of different areas. He has received ACS awards in polymer chemistry
(1984), organometallic chemistry (1989), inorganic chemistry (1994),
and materials chemistry (2001). He is a fellow of the American Academy
of Arts and Sciences (1993) and a member of the National Academy of
Sciences (1993). He is also a recipient of several international honors
including the Centenary Medal (1997) and the Frankland Medal (2003)
from the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Karl Ziegler Medal (2003)
from the German Chemical Society, and the Paolo Chini Award (1999)
from the Italian Chemical Society.
Professor Marks will present two lectures:
4:30-5:30 P.M. Thursday, November 6, 2003
1000 McPherson Lab
"Bridges Between Homogeneous and Heterogeneous
Catalysis. The Case for Single and Multiple Site
Olefin Polymerization Catalysis"
3:30-5:00 P.M. Friday, November 7, 2003
1000 McPherson Lab
The Evans Lecture
"Self-Assembly Processes and Nanophotonics"
In addition to the Evans lecture, two members of the OSU chemistry
faculty will present research talks (2:00-3:00 P.M, 1015 McPherson
Lab), and graduate students from the Department of Chemistry
will present posters on their research immediately following the Evans
lecture from 5:00-7:00 P.M. on the 1st floor of McPherson Lab. There
will be a catered reception concurrent with the poster session.
Undergraduate students are encouraged to attend the seminars and
poster session on Friday, November 7, as well as to meet the speaker
from 3:00-3:30 PM in the alcove outside of 1000 McPherson Lab before
both lectures.
