In November 2002, Gerry Raimann, who served on the University Staff Advisory Committee (USAC), approached Dr. Bruce Bursten, the Chairman of that term, about forming a
staff advisory committee in the Department of Chemistry. Several colleges at OSU have staff advisory committees. USAC had been asked on a number of occasions how to start
one. After some discussions it was decided that Chemistry would become a pilot project and perhaps a model for the rest of the university. Dr. Bursten was enthusiastic
about the idea. Dr. Bursten, Gerry and the USAC Governance sub-committee drafted a letter asking for volunteers who wanted to participate in the project. This letter was
emailed to all of the Chemistry staff in December 2002. Several people came forward, and Dr. Bursten eventually selected six charter members of the committee. Due to time
constraints and busy schedules, it took until September 2003 for the new committee to have its initial formative meeting. Dr. Bursten outlined his expectations and
expressed his confidence that the incoming chairman, Dr. Prabir Dutta, would find the committee valuable. The committee started work immediately by drafting by-laws and
outlining the goals and the mission. The rest is soon to be history.
