Analytical Chemistry At The Ohio State University

Introduction

Choosing a graduate school in Analytical Chemistry is a key step in your career. Up to now, you have been judged primarily by your performance in courses. Although course work forms the starting point of graduate work, your future professional prospects will be determined mainly by your research accomplishments in the laboratory. This brochure introduces the Analytical Chemistry graduate degree program at Ohio State University: faculty, curriculum, seminar program, and facilities. Our job is to provide you with background, initial research ideas and the resources to pursue them, so that you will emerge as an independent scientist. At OSU, the possible research projects are limited only by your imagination. We, the analytical faculty, welcome your interest in this Department, and invite you to call any of us or send an e-mail to ask questions about your prospective graduate career at OSU.

Research Facilities

The research facilities at the Ohio State University are outstanding. A partial list of major equipment in regular use by the Analytical Division is given below. In addition, each Analytical research group has invested heavily in computers, for on- and off- line data reduction, simulations, and word processing. Other Departmental equipment available on a service basis includes: x-ray diffraction, FT/NMR, XPS, computer graphics, and a wide array of routine analytical equipment.

Chromatography: GC/MS, LC/MS, supercritical fluid chromatography.
Electrochemistry: Several electrode potentiostats with computer control.
Mass Spectrometry: Quadrupole, double-focusing instruments with various ionization sources.
NMR: Bruker Avance 800 MHz, Avance 600, Avance 500 and Avance 300 consoles. Bruker Avance 400 MHz NMR spectrometer fully equipped solid-state capabilities, including CP/MAS, wideline deuterium Double Rotation.
Optical spectroscopy: Ultrafast spectroscopy, Raman, fluorescence, infrared, atomic absorption
Surface analysis: Analytical STEM, scanning Auger microprobe, ion mill, and a wide range of related instruments. Scanning tunneling microscope, atomic force microsope.
Thermal: Differential scanning calorimeter(thermal mechanical analyzer and dilatometer.
