Managing Editor, Environmental Science & Technology

The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society provides to its members and the worldwide scientific community a comprehensive collection of high quality information products and services for the practice and advancement of the chemical sciences. The Journal Publishing Group publishes the Society’s thirty-four periodicals which serve the broad interests of the chemical-related scientific and engineering markets. An existing journal, Environmental Science & Technology, serves an international community and is the top journal in total citations in environmental science. This publication is intended to maintain its flagship position in the field.

Position Summary

Core responsibilities will involve, but not be limited to: assisting the Editor-in-Chief with the assignment of manuscripts to a team of scientific Associate Editors located around the globe as well as to sections within the journal, interfacing with experts, and reviewers, during the peer-review process; adjudication of author disputes, representing the journal with a high degree of professionalism in both written and oral communications; understanding needs and trends within the communities served by the journal; networking with potential authors to possibly commissioning articles, reviews, and non-research material; overseeing the peer review process for selected article types; and working with the Coordinating Editor to streamline Editorial Office procedures and forms by the implementation of the web-based peer-review system.

Depending on the interests and qualifications of the chosen candidate, the Managing Editor may also work with the Editor-in-Chief and editorial team, in consultation with ACS Publications Division management, both in planning and implementing new content features for the journal and novel functionality for its web presence, as well as in conceiving publishing strategies and editorial initiatives to sustain the standing of Environmental Science & Technology as a preeminent publishing forum for chemists worldwide, in the face of activities from competing publications.

Applicant will also conduct field interviews and represent the journal at selected conferences and exhibits to acquire and maintain a deep understanding of the needs and trends within the communities served by the journal. Applicant will use market knowledge to provide input to the Environmental Science & Technology Editor-in-Chief and editorial team, as well as ACS Publications Division management, regarding the development of new content features and elements for the journal in print and on the web.

Education and Experience and Technical Requirements

Ph.D. in chemistry (preferably environmental chemistry) or related science or equivalent experience in the chemical sciences required. Combined 5+ years of relevant training and experience in an academic or industrial chemistry setting, and/or STM publishing environment. Direct experience with journal peer review and editorial decision-making process preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication, decision making, leadership, and management skills. Ability to work under time pressure and manage multiple priorities. Ability to think analytically and strategically. Travel required.
