Teaching Assistanceships and Fellowships

Teaching Assistantships and Fellowships
Our offers are extremely competitive. First-year students entering in 2006 will receive a stipend between $20,000 and $24,000 during their first year. In addition, tuition and fees are paid by the University for all students receiving a fellowship or GTA from Ohio State. There are a variety of multiple-year fellowships and scholarships, including departmental and University fellowships and support through a CBI training grant from the National Institutes of Health. The GTA's duties involve approximately eight student contact hours plus grading and preparation time each week. The eight contact hours include a combination of recitation sections, laboratory periods and office hours. For example, in the general chemistry program, most GTA's lead two one-hour recitation sections, one three-hour lab and hold two hours of office hours each week.

Fourth Quarter Research Assistantships

The teaching assistantships, offered by the Department of Chemistry, are twelve-month appointments. Students who successfully complete three quarters as a GTA and are in good academic standing, are eligible for a research associateship (RA) the following quarter, during which time the student can focus on his or her thesis research. For example, if you are employed as a GTA during the academic year (autumn, winter and spring quarters) and are in good standing at the end of that time, you would be supported by the Department as an RA during the summer.
