The central campus of the University is located in Columbus, which offers the cultural opportunities normally found in major cities. Columbus has a wide diversity of employers including the government, insurance and, increasingly, high-tech industries.
Our international airport is served by all major carriers with flights to anywhere in the country. While Columbus offers the benefits of a thriving metropolis, it is in many ways a small town. The people are friendly, the cost of living is low and getting around town is easy.
New arrivals to Columbus are often pleasantly surprised by the amount of water-recreation available. Two rivers and major reservoirs offer Columbus residents areas for boating, sailing, canoeing, water skiing and fishing. A fine zoo, dozens of shopping malls, specialty shops and housing styles ranging from turn-of-the-century brownstones to ultramodern condominiums and many fine public and private schools have made Columbus an attractive place to work, get an education, start a business, begin a career or raise a family.
The Wexner Center for the Arts, critically acclaimed for its striking architecture, regularly exhibits contemporary art and has liver performances. Columbus features a symphony orchestra, the Ballet Met, the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) and the Museum of Art in its downtown area. During the summer, the parks department sponsors both an outdoor theater program and a "Music in the Air" series which consists of free concerts ranging from bluegrass to jazz to classical. For movie buffs, the Drexel and Ohio Theaters showcase art films as well as popular classic films. Sports fans are well aware of the national prominence of the Ohio State intercollegiate programs. Many of our department's graduate students enjoy attending football games in the fall.
The sports facilities for students of the university are excellent. Many students regularly play basketball, racquetball or tennis or swim. We also have several departmental softball teams that compete during the summer in the University's intramural league.
