We provide basic computer support for the Department's faculty, staff,
postdocs and students. We support IBM compatible PCs running Windows95,
Windows98, WindowsNT and Windows2000, as well as Apple Macintosh computers
and workstations running several flavors of UNIX. Our services include new
hardware setup, software installations and upgrades, consultation on computer
related purchases, and centralized system administration.
In addition, we provide accounts on the departmental UNIX server
``chemistry'' and the Windows file server ``windows''. The Unix server
handles all departmental email, web pages, general purpose computing,
centralized Unix home directories with extensive storage capacity, and it
serves as the entry point into the Department from the outside. The Windows
server provides central file storage for all desktop PCs and Macs in the
Department.
We also maintain various student computer labs, in particular the Graduate
Computer Lab located in 2105 NW. This facility contains several modern PCs,
Macintoshes and UNIX workstations, as well as both color and black-and-white
printing and scanning devices. It also contains software to support the
graphics, plotting, word processing and molecular modeling needs of the
chemistry community.
Finally we coordinate with CISG (Electronics shop) in providing and
maintaining the departmental network, a switched state-of-the-art Ethernet
with fiber-optic links between our five buildings.
Computer Support has established charging policies
for virus bailouts and printing. All other services are provided without charge.
Requests should in general be submitted via email to
support
for general requests, or to
webmaster@chemistry.ohio-state.edu
for web-related requests, instead of to an individual member of the Support group.
