- Use different passwords on different computers.
- If you have broadband network access for your home computer (cable modem,
DSL), get a personal firewall (see Zone
Labs web page).
- Always keep your Anti-Virus software current:
OIT Virus Infopages
- Run "Windows Update" on Windows computers regularly
- Install promptly all security-related patches issued for your operating system
- Disable all services that you don't absolutely need
- Don't open suspicious attachments
- Don't let browsers and other programs save passwords (see
Don't save passwords in Netscape mail!
in the Security section of our web pages).
- If you use Outlook to access your email, turn off "Auto Preview"; the couple of
seconds you lose without it will cut the risk of spreading infections.
- Turn off all active content (scripts, ActiveX, etc.) in Outlook and Internet
Explorer.
- If you use Eudora, here is a very good link that describes how to make Eudora
at least give you a warning box and ask permission before executing attached
files
- We recommend that if you do not use Visual Basic scripting on your
Windows PC in the course of your work day, you should turn this option off.
To do so:
- Click on Settings
- Click on Control Panel
- Click on Add/Remove
- Click on the Windows Setup tab
- Click on Accessories to obtain the details
- Uncheck Windows Scripting Host if it is checked
- Click "OK" to save any changes
- Consult Home Network Security Tips issued by CERT
- Read the R.U.N.S.A.F.E. guidelines by
James Madison University
