The Computer Support group reminds everyone in the Chemistry Department that
you are strongly encouraged to consult with us about your needs if you are contemplating
purchasing computers and/or computer related equipment.
Computer Support will maintain software and hardware
only for *departmental* (as opposed to privately owned) computers and as long
as we are solely responsible for them.
The following types of new computers are supported:
- PCs (Intel, AMD) running Windows (2000, XP) or Redhat Linux (9, Enterprise, Fedora)
- Macs running MacOS
- Sun workstations running Solaris
Existing and previously supported computers (IBM RS6000s running AIX, SGIs running IRIX) will
continue to be supported; new computers are limited to the above
list. The list will be reviewed on an annual basis by the Computer Committee.
If you wish to purchase computers not on this list, please contact Computer Support.
Computer Support will not assume responsibility for
equipment that was purchased without consulting with us or that was purchased
against this policy our against our explicit recommendations. In case of difficulties with such
equipment (software and/or hardware problems) you will need to contact the
vendor yourself; in particular, we will not attempt to do any maintenance of
such equipment while it is still under warranty.
The following guidelines discuss custom-building PCs and the IBM Prime Supplier Agreement:
