This FAQ describes how to use PCs running Windows95/98/NT/2000 and how to access
resources on the central Windows servers in the Department from PCs and Macs.
- General:
All faculty, staff, postdocs and grad students in the Department have their
own Windows accounts and can access their U: share on the Windows file servers. Your Windows
username is identical to your username on the chemistry Unix server, but your
Windows password is independent of (and should be different from) your Unix
password.
When you login on a Windows machine, make sure you select the CHEMISTRY domain,
not the name of the PC.
Windows accounts have the same initial password as Unix accounts.
- Changing passwords:
Please change your initial password as soon as possible. You can do this from
any PC in the Lab 2105 NW, or from other correctly configured PCs running
WindowsNT/2000. First login with your username and your assigned password, then hit
CTRL-ALT-DEL once and select the "Change Password" button. We enforce good
passwords, and the system will reject passwords that are not considered safe
enough.
- The U: share:
The U: share is the equivalent of the /home directory on the chemistry Unix
server and can be accessed from all PCs (and on request, from all the Macs)
in the Department. You can use it to store all your documents. The U: drive
is periodically backed up. On all WindowsNT/2000 PCs, your U: share should be
mapped automatically.
- Mapping the U: share:
- From PCs:
In order to access your U: share as well as other shares on the Windows file servers and
central printers in the Lab 2105 NW from your PC in your research group, you
need to first login on your computer, even if it is running Windows95 or 98.
You need to login with your Windows username and password. Do
not hit cancel, and do not use a different (arbitrary) username. If
you do, you will neither be able to access the central printers, nor your U:
share.
On most Windows machines configured by Computer Support, you will automatically
map your U: drive upon login. In order to map your U: drive on a PC running
Windows95 or Windows 98, or to re-map it on a WindowsNT or Windows2000 computer,
- right click the "Network Neighborhood" icon
- choose "Map Network Drive"
- a dialog box appears; choose "U:" as the drive letter and
"\\windows\username$"
as the path, where "username" is your Windows user name (note the trailing $-sign after
the username)
- Click the "Reconnect at logon" box (if you want to automatically map this drive
the next time you login) and press the "Enter" key
- When the connection requests your username and password, for your username, type CHEMISTRY\username, and then your password. This tells the file server what set of username and password you are using.
- From Macs:
This assumes that you have requested access for Macs, and your U: share has
been "macified". In order to access your U: share from Macs, proceed as
follows:
- Select Chooser, then AppleShare (in Chemistry AppleTalk zone)
- Select file server "Windows" and click on OK
- In the popup window that appears, log in as Registered user with your Windows
username and password
- Another popup window appears, and from the list of macified Windows accounts
shown, you should be able to select yours, then click on OK
- A desktop icon for your account should appear for your use
- You can then close the other windows
If you U: share has not been macified, you should send a request to
Chemistry Computer Support.
But you can still move Mac files to your U:
share using the "scratch" share that is accessible from PCs and Macs; see the FAQ
"How do I How do I share files between Macs
and PCs in the Department?.
- Accessing central printers:
If
you do, you will neither be able to access the central printers, nor your U:
share.
To set up a PC to print to any of the printers in 2105 NW, do the following
(this works on Win 95, 98, ME, NT and 2000):
- Open your "Printers" folder (Start --> Settings --> Printers)
- Delete (old) printers that are called anything like 2105NW, hotstuff or
phaser (When asked if you would like to delete any files associated with
these printers, answer "No")
- Double Click "Network Neighborhood"
- Double Click "Entire Network"
- Double Click "Chemistry"
- Double Click "Print-Server"
- Double click "2105NW"
- Answer "Yes"
- Close the print queue window that opens
- Repeat 7-9 for "Phaser", "hotstuff", "hotstuffp", and "2105NWP"
Naming scheme: 2105NWP = 2105 room number, NW Building Name, [P PostScript Driver]
In most circumstances, you only need to install the non-postscript version.
However, in the unlikely event that you print a document or PDF file and the
fonts do not match the on-screen version or are completely wrong, you will
need to use the Postscript driver version.
The Phaser is only Postscript, hence only one definition.
2105NW is an HP 4000TN with duplex option and second paper tray. Hotstuff
and HotstuffP is an HP 4Si/Mx with duplex option. Phaser is a Tektronix 360
Color Wax printer with second paper tray.
- Accessing files on the chemistry Unix server:
Your /home directory on chemistry, as well as chemistry's /scr disk are
available from any PC running Windows. This service is provided by a software
named "Samba" on chemistry.
- right click the "Network Neighborhood" icon
- choose "Map Network Drive"
- a dialog box appears; choose any drive letter and
"\\unix\username"
as the path, where "username" is your Unix user name, which should be the same
as your Windows username (note that there is no trailing $-sign after
the username)
- Click the "Reconnect at logon" box (if you want to automatically map this drive
the next time you login) and press the "Enter" key
To map chemistry's /scr disk, proceed in the same way. You can also map the
/scr disk by "browsing":
- double-click the "Network Neighborhood" icon
- double-click on "unix"
- double-click on "scr"
NOTE:
When mapping resources on the chemistry Unix server from a PC, you need to
specify your Windows username/password at the prompt,
not your Unix username/password! The chemistry Unix server simply forwards
connection requests to the Windows server, and the Windows server authenticates the
requests (using the Windows password database). This somewhat counter-intuitive
setup eliminates the need to introduce another password database with a third
username/password pair.
- Logging out:
To logout from your WindowsNT/2000 account, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and select "Logoff".
Do not lock the PC.
- More information on different computer accounts in the Chemistry Department:
For more information on your different computer accounts, see the FAQ
Why do I have so many different accounts/passwords?.
