1) General News: SciFinder Scholar 2.0 beta available:
CAS is preparing a new release of SciFinder Scholar, and the Chemistry
Department has again been asked to participate in the beta testing of this
product. For logistical reasons, release 2.0 beta of SciFinder Scholar is
only available from the Chemistry Department server for Chemistry Department
faculty, staff and students to participate in this testing phase.
For a brief description of the enhancements, and to download the beta
version, please go to
Internal --> Computer Support --> Scifinder.
2) General News: Mail to everyone@chemistry.ohio-state.edu:
The email address everyone@chemistry.ohio-state.edu is strictly for
Chemistry-Department-related business and should not be (ab)used for
non-chemistry or personal material.
In particular, do NOT send virus hoaxes or chain letters to everyone. Our
users are already receiving enough mail, and we really do not want to add
(more) spam.
If you receive a message that already has 5 different headers from people who
resent it, and if this messages asks you to pass it on to 15 "friends", don't
even consider sending it to everyone, regardless of the contents.
3) Unix News: Access permissions on user directories:
It has come to our attention that there is some confusion about default file
access permissions under Unix.
By default, all your files and directories on the chemistry Unix server and
other Unix computers will be readable by everybody else. If you don't like
the default, you can change individual file permissions with the "chmod"
command and default file permissions for all newly created files with the
"umask" command.
All mail-related directories, however, are by default set up so that only YOU
can access them. Nobody can read your email, and your privacy is guaranteed
by the default settings.
For more information, please go to
Internal --> Computer Support --> Chemistry Department Related FAQs.
4) Computer Lab News: Please pick up your printouts:
This is a reminder for our users to please pick up their printouts from the
Computer Lab 2105 NW and to print only things that they need. Every week we
have to throw away hundreds of pages of printouts that were not picked up.
Please help us to reduce this waste of paper.
