1) Computer Lab News: PC Upgrades:
We are currently in the process of deploying new and faster PCs in the
Computer Lab 2105 NW.
The upgrade process will take some time; please bear with us. If you find a
sign on a PC saying "This PC is being upgraded; please don't use it!", then
PLEASE DON'T USE IT.
The departmental NT-server (chem-nt) is being upgraded as well; look forward
to more announcements about NT. We are also preparing more documentation on
what's available on the PCs and Macs.
2) Lab News: Tektronix color printer:
Computer Support has purchased a new color printer: a Tektronix Phaser 360.
It is publicly available in the Computer Lab 2105 NW. Support will be
included in the new PCs that are currently being deployed (see Topic 1).
For more information, please see the Support Bulletin Board at
Internal --> Computer Support --> Support Bulletins.
3) General News: UPS for chemistry and chem-nt:
The central servers chemistry and chem-nt are on Uninterruptible Power
Supplies now. For more information, please see the Support Bulletin Board at
Internal --> Computer Support --> Support Bulletins.
4) Unix News: anonymous FTP upload available:
Anonymous FTP upload is now available on the chemistry Unix server. This
allows people outside the Department to leave files for members of the
Department without needing accounts on chemistry. For more information,
please see the Support Bulletin Board at
Internal --> Computer Support --> Support Bulletins.
5) Unix News: new versions of pine and pico available:
We have upgraded the email program "pine" and the editor "pico" on the
chemistry Unix server and all assimilated Sun-Solaris and IBM-AIX machines.
On chemistry, the default is still the old version. You get the new version
with the command
pine.4.00
For more information, please see the Support Bulletin Board at
Internal --> Computer Support --> Support Bulletins.
6) General News: Vacation Feature:
This is actually not new, but has been available for a long time. If you
plan to stay away from your email, you can activate a vacation message to
be sent once to everybody who sends you email. It is very easy to enable
this feature, and we expect all of you to be able to use it without help
from Computer Support.
For more information, please see the Chemistry-related FAQ section at
Internal --> Computer Support --> Chemistry Department Related FAQs.
