1) General News: Scifinder:
We remind our users that Windows and Macintosh versions of Scifinder Scholar
are available for download from the chemistry server.
For download instructions and more information, please go to the Computer
Support Group web page:
Internal --> Computer Support --> Scifinder.
Please don't use the Beta Test Software anymore; CAS will discontinue it at
their discretion shortly.
2) Computer Lab News: Slidemaker:
We would like to remind you that we have purchased and installed a Polaroid
ProPalette 7000 slidemaker in the Computer Lab 2105 NW. It is accessible from
one of the PCs, hexane. It was announced in Issue 8 of this newsletter.
Please contact the graphics artist, graphics@chemistry.ohio-state.edu, for
assistance.
3) Screen freeze problem on RS6000 workstations solved:
After spending considerable time and effort trying to solve the annoying
screen-freeze problem on the 3 IBM RS6000 workstations in the Computer Lab
2105 NW, IBM has finally replaced the graphics cards on all 3 systems
Thursday last week. We believe that the old cards were faulty. Since then,
no further problems have been reported.
The 3 RS6000 workstations, mendelevium, nobelium and lawrencium, are used as
servers for compute-intensive jobs running in the background (mostly
Gaussian) and for visualization. The screen freeze problem did not impact the
batch jobs, but rendered the graphics console useless for interactive work.
As a result, the machines had to be rebooted frequently, each time
terminating some of the batch jobs.
4) Unix News: Email addresses:
If you receive email on chemistry and on postbox (aka smtp.service,
pop.service, etc.), we recommend that you consolidate your email addresses
and receive email only in one place (chemistry).
To have your osu.edu address forwarded to chemistry instead of postbox,
please call UTS at 8-HELP. You will need to tell them your osu.edu address
(e.g. raimann.1@osu.edu) and your SSN# (for verification). Then ask that your
osu.edu email be forwarded to your chemistry address (e.g.
raimann@chemistry.ohio-state.edu).
You can then read your email by telnetting to chemistry and using pine or
elm, or by pointing your Eudora to chemistry.
