chem-nt.
The Macintosh version will be available from UTS within three weeks.
It will be available on chemistry next Wednesday (May 27).
Please note that the Beta Test Software will be discontinued at CAS'
discretion shortly.

3) Computer Lab News: Slidemaker available:
We have purchased and installed a Polaroid ProPalette 7000 slidemaker in
the Computer Lab 2105 NW. It is accessible from one of the PCs, hexane.
The resolution of the device is up to 4096 horizontally by 3072 vertically
(4 K). The easy-to-use camera allows 35mm instant slide film, conventional
slide film (E-6 process) and negative film (C-41 process) for making
prints.
Please contact the graphics artist, graphics@chemistry.ohio-state.edu, for
assistance.
4) Unix News: finger:
Finger requests over the Internet represent a security risk, both by allowing
outsiders to gain information about usernames and who is currently logged in,
and by having the potential to allow outsiders to exploit security weaknesses
in order to gain privileged access to a computer. For this reason, we are
blocking finger requests at the firewall as part of our security strategy.
Since the chemistry server is therefore no longer open to finger requests
from the outside, we have re-enabled finger to work within the Chemistry
Department.
Finger is a program that displays information about local and remote users.
For more information, see the finger manual page ("man finger") on any
Unix system.
