1) If you are contemplating purchase of a computer...
If you plan to purchase a Unix workstation, please coordinate and discuss
this with Steve and Gerry. We will advise you on possible solutions and
discuss with you how we can best support your machine.
If you plan to buy a PC or Mac, please talk to Barb or Tim first. In the
windows arena, we currently migrate to Windows 95 and Windows NT. Our
central NT server offers personal accounts and home directories (similar
to Unix) for every faculty, postdoc and staff in the department. As we are
expanding central services, we will give out individual NT accounts for
students as well. More on NT in a future issue.
2) Status of screen freezes on RS6000s in 2105 NW:
Lawrencium froze again over the weekend. We are now working with IBM to
solve the problem. We're doing our best to get this problem resolved as
soon as possible.
3) Books and Manuals available in 2105NW:
Among lots of manuals, we have the following books available:
Wordperfect Suite 7
Sigma Plot
Microsoft Excel
Microsoft Office for Windows95 for Dummies
Macworld System 7.5 Bible
Macintosh System 7.5 for Dummies
4) Disk quotas on Unix /home:
You can determine your current quota by logging in to chemistry and typing
quota -v
After the hardware upgrade in December (see "Support Bulletin" on the Web)
we increased everybody's diskquota. If your research work requires more
disk space, please contact computer support.
