blank Connect to your computer at work with Windows XP

To connect to your machine, you will need your IP address of your machine here at work. You can get it by doing the following:

Click on Start, then Run, in the run window type cmd and hit enter. At the command prompt, type ipconfig and hit enter. You will see a bunch of numbers and letters like this:

Write down the number to the left of “IP Address”. In this example it is: 128.146.238.91.

NOTE: If you have one or more network cards, and or wireless cards you will see more than one Ethernet adapter. Choose the one that says “Local Area Connection”.

  1. On your home computer, click Start, point to All Programs, and then point to Accessories.

  2. In the Accessories menu, point to Communications, and then click Remote Desktop Connection.

  3. You will see this window:

  4. In the Computer box, type the IP address of your computer, which you wrote down earlier.

  5. Click Connect.

  6. When the Log On to Windows dialog box appears, type your user name, password like shown below and then click OK.

The Remote Desktop window opens, and you see the desktop settings, files, and programs that are on your host computer, which in this example is your work computer. Your host computer remains locked, and nobody can access it without a password. In addition, no one will be able to see the work you are doing remotely.

To end your Remote Desktop session:

  1. Click Start, and then click Log Off at the bottom of the Start menu.

  2. When prompted, click Log Off.
