Virex 6.2 for Classic Mac OS users

Virex 6.2 is for use with Mac OS version 7.5.5 or later, including
Mac OS 8.x and 9.x. It does not run under Mac OS X.
- Download/Install Virex 6.2
(according to instructions from OIT's Software-to-Go website at http://osusls.osu.edu).
- Download/Install current virus definition files
(also per instructions from OIT's Software-to-Go website).
- Configure Virex 6.2 to perform automatic updates
To schedule Virex 6.2 to do automatic updates (to keep Virex's virus
definitions up-to-date and your system better protected; you may get
the updates from servers maintained by OIT or Network
Associates):
- Start the Virex application.
- Choose Preferences from the Edit menu.
- In the dialog box that appears, scroll down until you see the
EUpdate icon and then click on it.
- Click on the TCP/IP FTP radio button under "Electronic Updating."
- Fill in the following boxes under "TCP/IP FTP Updating."
- Update Server: type vscan.osu.edu (for OIT's server) or
ftp.nai.com (for Network Associates' server)
- Port: should be 21 if it isn't already
- User Name: n/a
- Password: n/a
- Account: n/a
- Update Folder: /pub/virex/ (on OIT's server) or
/virusdefs/mac/virex/ (on Network Associates' server)
- Click on the Save button to exit the dialog box.
- To set a time for the automatic update, choose Edit Schedule in
the Schedule menu.
- There are three drop-down menus in the dialog box that appears.
Click on the first one (labeled "Diagnose") and choose the eUpdate
option.
- Set a time to run the operation by clicking on the third menu
(labeled "After Startup"). If the option selected is "At Specific
Time," (recommended) enter those values as well. Update Virex 6.2 at
least once a month. Click on the Add button and then click on the
Save button to exit the dialog box.
- Another way to update Virex 6.2 virus definition files.
An update may also be attempted at any time by starting the Virex
application, and clicking on the "EUpdate" button on the buttonbar.
A network connection to the specified update server will be made, and
an electronic update done if the virus definitions on the local
system are out-of-date.
