blank How do I choose the right kind of transparency to use in Computer Lab printers?

QUESTIONS ABOUT TRANSPARENCIES? PLEASE ASK (OR CONSULT THIS FAQ).

  • It is very important to use the right kind of transparencies in the printers in the Computer Lab.

  • Failure to use the right kind of transparency will produce either a minor or MAJOR disaster, ranging from poor-quality printouts, to major printer damage (transparencies melted onto the printer's gears, rollers, etc.), requiring expensive repairs or replacement & downtime.

HP LASERJET 4000TN & HP LASERJET IV SiMX (black&white/grayscale laser printers)

  • These printers can accept transparencies designed for laser printers, or photocopiers.

  • If the transparency you are using has a sensing strip along its edge (required for some photocopiers), or an accompanying backing sheet, remove these if possible, to prevent printer jams.

  • Example(s) of suitable transparencies:

    • 3M Transparency Film for Laser Printers, CG3300
(Available at OSU Stores, OSU Bookstores)

    • Highland #904 Transparency Film for Dry Toner Copiers
      (Available from Chemistry's Office of Materials Management, 1136NW;
      also available from OSU Stores)

    • Highland #902 Transparency Film for Plain Paper Copiers
      (Available from OSU Stores)

  • DO NOT USE IR TRANSPARENCY FILM!

  • Print job setup: we suggest you choose the manual feed tray as your paper source, and feed the transparencies into the printer one at a time.

    • From the lab Macs, choose:

File/Print, then Paper Source: Tray 1 (Manual)

    • From the lab PCs, choose:

File/Page Setup, then Paper Source: Manual Feed (Tray 1)      OR

File/Print, then Properties, then under "Paper" tab, Source is: Manual Feed

TEKTRONIX PHASER 360 (color thermal wax process printer)

  • For this printer, you may use a variety of transparencies, including those designed for laser printers, photocopiers, as well as those specifically marketed by Tektronix for this, and similar printers.

  • If the transparency you are using has a sensing strip along its edge (required for some photocopiers), or an accompanying backing sheet, remove these if possible, to prevent printer jams.

  • Example(s) of suitable transparencies:

    • Tektronix Phaser 340/350/360 Premium Transparency Film, A-Size/Letter, 8.5 x 11 in. Part No. 016-1361-00 (http://www.tek.com/Color_Printers)

    • 3M Transparency Film for Laser Printers, CG3300
(Available at OSU Stores, OSU Bookstores)

    • Highland #904 Transparency Film for Dry Toner Copiers
      (Available from Chemistry's Office of Materials Management, 1136NW;
      also available from OSU Stores)

    • Highland #902 Transparency Film for Plain Paper Copiers
      (Available from OSU Stores)

  • DO NOT USE IR TRANSPARENCY FILM!

  • Print job setup: we suggest you choose the separate transparency tray as your paper source (esp. for multiple transparencies &/or remote printing without the worry of someone else's job being printed onto your transparencies).

    • Place transparencies in the transparency tray.

    • Replace the upper paper tray in the printer with the transparency tray.

    • From the lab Macs, choose:

      File/Print, then Paper Source: Transparency

    • From the lab PCs, choose:

File/Page Setup, then Source: Transparency      OR

File/Print, then Properties, then under "Paper" tab, Paper Source: Transparency

    • When finished, switch printer trays (remove the transparency tray & replace with upper paper tray).

  • Alternative print job setup: choose the manual feed tray as your paper source, and feed the transparencies into the printer one at a time.

    • From the lab Macs, choose:

File/Print, then Paper Source: Manual Feed

    • From the lab PCs, choose:

File/Page Setup, then Source: Manual Transparency      OR

File/Print, then Properties, then under "Paper" tab, Paper Source: Manual Transparency
