blank How to configure Thunderbird for Windows XP

This FAQ is to give you the correct settings to read E-Mail from Chemistry, not any other mail server, such as postbox, mps, math, etc... You will need to contact the respective computer support team in the area for those settings. This FAQ will address the common settings.

If you want to use Thunderbird from outside the Department, make sure that the SSL secure connection is set. See below.

To set up a Thunderbird account, run the Account Wizard (this will happen automatically the first time Thunderbird is used).

  1. New Account Setup

  2. a. Select ‘Email account’ and hit NEXT
  3. Fill in your name and email address and hit NEXT

  4. a. Your address will be ‘username@chemistry.ohio-state.edu’
  5. Select type of server to be ‘IMAP’

  6. a. Incoming Server: chemistry.ohio-state.edu
  7. Enter your incoming username

  8. a. This will be the same as your ‘username’ in step 2.
  9. Choose an account name; this can be anything you like.
  10. Hit FINISH
Once the account is setup you will want to set up a secure connection. Go to Tools->Account Settings->Server Settings. Under Security Settings, choose SSL. Use secure authentication should remain unchecked. Click OK.

There are a variety of other options you can set based on your personal preferences. For more information about options, refer to the Thunderbird help file. When you're finished changing options, click on OK to save your changes.

To set up spam blocking refer to How do I block spam email? Once the UNIX files are changed go to File->Subscribe and check the new junk folder to have it appear in your folder list for viewing spam messages. Note: this folder will not be created until you receive the first spam message. You will have to delete the spam messages regularly or they will accumulate.
