Chemistry mail spool usage, see the FAQ,
How do I optimize my email client?
We do not allow insecure (unencrypted) access to email or any other service
from outside the Department anymore. There are several secure ways how you
can access your email from outside the Department (all of them work equally
well from inside the Department as well):
- Use the web-based email interface TWIG:
TWIG is an easy-to-use secure web application that can be accessed
from anywhere in the world. Click
here
to start.
TWIG runs on top of the Apache web server and uses IMAP with SSL (secure
sockets layer) encryption, something that is supported by all commonly used
web browsers, including recent versions of Netscape and Internet Explorer.
TWIG allows you to login through a web page and presents you with a graphical
user interface (GUI) that is very intuitive. Unlike Eudora, it leaves all
your mail on the chemistry Unix server, sorted into as many folders as you
like. These folders are kept in your /home directory.
In order to access the same folders that pine or elm use, go to
Mail --> Folder Management
and import the folders into TWIG.
Note: In order to use TWIG, you have to enable
cookies in your web browser:
In Netscape, go to Edit --> Preferences --> Advanced --> Cookies --> Only
accept cookies originating from the same server as the page being viewed.
In Internet Explorer, go to Edit --> Preferences --> Cookies (In Receiving
Files Section) --> When receiving cookies: Ask for each site.
If TWIG presents you a login page after you select any option, please see
the FAQ "TWIG keeps returning to the login screen.
Why does this happen and how do I fix it?".
- Netscape Messenger:
You can use Netscape Messenger securely by clicking on the "Use SSL" button
in the IMAP Mail Server configuration panel. Like with TWIG, you will be able
to store all your mail on the chemistry Unix server, create mail folders
and/or import folders created by pine or elm.
- Start Netscape Messenger
- Edit --> Preferences
- choose "Mail Servers"
- Incoming Mail Servers: you should have "chemistry.ohio-state.edu"
- select "chemistry.ohio-state.edu" --> Edit
- General tab: should have your username
- select "IMAP" tab
- check box "Use Secure Connection (SSL)"
- Click OK
Note: If you check SSL/TLS for "Outgoing Mail
Server (SMTP Server)" under "Mail Servers", accept the default port of 25
(port 465 will work for chemistry, but other mail servers may or may not support it).
You need SSL/TLS on port 25 as well as authentication for outgoing email
if you want to relay email through chemistry from outside the Department.
For more information on email relaying, see the FAQ
"Why can I not relay email anymore?".
- Outlook/Outlook Express:
Outlook can use secure POP or secure IMAP; in either case you need to check
the button "Use SSL" to enforce a secure connection.
- Start Outlook Express
- Tools --> Accounts
- select tab "Mail": you should have "chemistry.ohio-state.edu"
- select "chemistry.ohio-state.edu" --> Properties
- select tab "Advanced"
- check box "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" for incoming
mail (POP3 or IMAP) and accept the default port
Note: If you check SSL/TLS for "Outgoing Mail
Server (SMTP Server)" under "Mail Servers", accept the default port of 25
(port 465 will work for chemistry, but other mail servers may or may not support it).
You need SSL/TLS on port 25 as well as authentication for outgoing email
if you want to relay email through chemistry from outside the Department.
For more information on email relaying, see the FAQ
"Why can I not relay email anymore?".
- Eudora:
As of version 5.1, SSL capability has been added to Eudora. Older versions
of Eudora did not support secure email; they always sent usernames and
passwords unencrypted over the net. Such unencrypted access is blocked by our
firewall.
Release 5.2 of Eudora can be downloaded from OIT's Software-To-Go site at
http://osusls.osu.edu/.
You need to turn on SSL to enforce a secure connection. This is described in
the FAQ Notes on setting up SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)
in Eudora 5.2.
If you want to access your chemistry email from outside the Department using
an older version of Eudora, you need to obtain a free or commercial SSH
client and configure it to tunnel Eudora through SSH. This is described in
detail in The Great SSH Primer.
Note: If you use Homenet, you do not need SSH.
- pine, elm or mutt on the chemistry Unix server:
You can ssh to chemistry and use the menu-driven email programs
pine, elm or mutt. We have an SSH Java
applet that will securely connect you to the chemistry Unix server. More
about SSH can be found in The Great SSH
Primer.
Note: If you use Homenet, you do not need SSH.
- Any other email client using POP/SSL or IMAP/SSL:
You can use any email program that uses POP or IMAP protocol
with SSL (secure sockets layer). If an email program supports
SSL, you can usually enable it by checking a box in the
configuration menu.
