How do I install and and configure MacSSH PPC?
|
These are instructions how to install and configure MacSSH PPC ("classic"
MacOS on PowerPC CPUs).
- Download/expand MacSSHPPC.
- In MacSSH PPC folder, run "MacSSH PPC" application.
- After application is running, go to Favorites, Edit Favorites,
and edit the settings.
- To connect to the chemistry server via SSH, enter
chemistry.ohio-state.edu as Host Name.
- Under the security tab, pick ssh2 (Secure Shell) as the
protocol, and enter your username on the chemistry server in the
appropriate field. Do not enter your chemistry user account
password.
- Click on the SSH2 tab; you get a choice of encryption,
authentication, and compression methods to use, but you can stick
with the defaults. Click on Initialize SSH... (again, you get some
choices, but you'll be OK sticking to the defaults) and generate
keys (you'll be asked to enter a private key passphrase -- you may
enter any string you'd like for this).
- You can now exit the Edit Favorites window.
- You should now be able to SSH to chemistry. Go to File, Open
Connection... and you should see chemistry.ohio-state.edu as the
default host name, with the Secure Shell v2 checkbox checked.
Click on Connect.
- You may get the prompt "the key for this host has never been
seen before. Are you sure you want to trust it?", and additional
info re host key fingerprint. If this is the first time you're
trying to connect to a given host (e.g., chemistry), this is
normal, and you should choose "Accept and Save". You'll then be
sked for your private key passphrase (that you previously created
in step 4c; enter it & click OK. You should *then* be asked for
your chemistry account's password; enter it and click OK. You're
now logged into chemistry -- answer the remaining prompts (from
what type of terminal are you loggin in? (answer: vt100); press
your erase key), and you'll come to the command line.
- That's all there is to setting up MacSSH PPC for SSH'ing to the
chemistry server. If you want to do port forwarding, additional
steps are necessary -- this is briefly outlined in the QuickStart
document that came with MacSSH PPC. This document gives much
useful info; you should read it, if you've not done so already.
