You might be a little confused by the different computer accounts in our
Department and what you can do with them. The following should demonstrate
that things are really quite simple.
Definition: An account is a username and a password that authorizes you to
use certain services on certain computers.
- The chemistry Unix account:
This is an account on the central Unix server in the Department
(chemistry.ohio-state.edu) and on all centrally managed Unix computers
running Solaris, AIX, IRIX or Linux. You need it for the following purposes:
- To login interactively to the chemistry Unix server using SSH or TELNET (internally only)
- To login interactively to other centrally managed Unix computers
- To access your email on chemistry via Eudora, Netscape Messenger, Outlook
or any other POP or IMAP-compliant email program (see here
how to configure Eudora correctly)
- To access your email on chemistry via the web-based interface
TWIG
- To (S)FTP to the chemistry Unix server or other centrally managed Unix
computers
- To access the web-based DPR
Department Procurement Request) system
- To access other restricted web pages, or web pages that require authentication,
on the chemistry Unix server (practically all the departmental web pages
reside on the chemistry Unix server, unless explicitly noted otherwise)
- To access the Calcium Calendar
Note that most of the above services won't be available until you activate your
Unix account by logging into chemistry.ohio-state.edu and changing your password.
This account/password is often referred to as the "email account/password".
Since it is not a priori clear what server you use for your email (chemistry,
or postbox; see below), this term is usually somewhat misleading.
Note: The chemistry Unix server is the only Unix machine to which you can login
from outside the Department.
- The Windows account:
This is an account on the central Windows server in the Department and on all
WindowsNT/Windows2000 PCs in the CHEMISTRY domain. You need it for the following
purposes:
- To login to all Windows2000/XP PCs in the CHEMISTRY domain
- To access the NMR lab computers in the Chemistry NMR Facility
- To map your U: share on the Windows file server from all Windows PCs and Macs in
the Department
- To print to central printers in 2105 NW
- To access your /home directory on the chemistry Unix server from
all Windows PCs in the Department
- To SFTP to the Windows file server
For more information about Windows accounts, see the
Windows FAQ.
- The osu.edu account:
This is not an account issued by Chemistry Computer Support. Rather, this
account is issued by OIT (University Technology Services) to all students and
university employees. You need it for the following purposes:
- To access your email on postbox.acs.ohio-state.edu (the university-wide
mail server) via Eudora, Outlook or any other POP-compliant email program
(we recommend to have your osu.edu email forwarded to chemistry and read
all your mail on chemistry, i.e. in one location)
- To access WebCT
- To "enable access" to the rest of the departmental and university-wide
network from public PCs and Macs in computing labs in the Chemistry
Department
- To access software on OIT's Software Downloads server
- To use OIT public computing labs all over campus
To activate your osu.edu account, or to change your osu.edu password, clck
here.
These accounts are also discussed in the
"Introduction for New Users".
Note that your Unix username is of the form "lastname" or "ilastname", with
"i" your initial. Your Windows username is the same as your Unix username. Your
osu.edu username is of the form "lastname.n", with "n" a number. The
respective passwords associated with these 3 accounts are independent of each
other and should be chosen differently.
