Subject: UTS proxy server for web access

This information came from Kevin Balogh (kev+@osu.edu), UTS.

Many OSU information sources, such as certain Library Databases, will only
allow access if your machine's network address (IP address) is recognized as
coming from OSU. IP Addresses assigned by outside providers, such as
Roadrunner, do not belong to OSU, so access would normally be denied to these
 users.

The solution UTS has in place works for IP-address protected resources that
are accessible via a web browser. This should be the case for most of the
library information; other IP protected resources that rely on other
protocols, such as Telnet, are not yet available.

You can configure either your Netscape browser or Microsoft Internet Explorer
browser so that it uses a UTS proxy server. This will enable your Roadrunner
connection to "look like" it is coming from an OSU IP address, which is what
several of the Library services require.

 Netscape Instructions:

In the Edit menu, select preferences
     then Advanced/Proxies
     then Manual proxy configuration
The HTTP proxy should be set to: warp.net.ohio-state.edu at port 8080.

 Microsoft Internet Explorer instructions:

 1) On the View menu, click Options.
 2) Click the Connection tab
 3) In the Proxy Server area, click the "Connect Through a Proxy Server" box.
 4) Click Settings, then type into the http: line: warp.net.ohio-state.edu
and in the first line labeled port type 8080.
 5) Click OK.
 6) Click OK

In either case, this will cause all your web traffic to flow through a OSU
Internet connection, so please use your normal Roadrunner or other ISP
connection to access all web sights other then OSU's IP protected sites.
Doing this simply requires temporary disabling of the proxy server option on
your browser, and will save OSU funds.

When you connect to the proxy server, you will be prompted for your
 osu.edu username and password.
