Subject: DHCP available
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a way to dynamically assign
IP-addresses and names to portable computers (laptops) for which it would
not be practical to statically assign a permanent IP address.
If you configure your laptop to use DHCP, at each reboot it will be assigned
an address such as
chem-dhcp-n.mps.ohio-state.edu
with the number "n" taken from the pool of available addresses. Other network
parameters (such as the netmask) will also be set correctly. When you take
your laptop elsewhere, it will receive correct addresses and network parameters
for the new location without requiring any manual change.
