Major simplification for many-electron wave functions:
Each electron moves, to a first approximation, independently of the others.
Wave functions resembling the hydrogen atom eigenstates are useful first approximations for the wave functions of electrons in many-electron atoms.
These simplifications lead to the following approximate helium atom wave function.
