Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunities1. National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST)
Activities within the Chemical Microsensor Program at NIST offer interested
applicants a variety of advanced research opportunities relating to project
areas that include:
- Nanoengineering of materials
- Application of microarrays for combinatorial studies of materials
processing, kinetics and property optimization
- Development of new sensing schemes
- Design/fabrication of micromachines (MEMS/NEMS) devices
- Utilization of millisecond and microsecond thermal cycling in microscale
structures
- Study of fundamental chemical and electronic effects/mechanisms for chemical
sensing
Most positions are open only to U.S. citizens (although a joint NIH-NIST
program does not require US citizenship). Applications include a brief
research proposal. Stipends and benefits are generous (base salary ~$60,000)
30 miles from Washington, DC.

2. University of Alberta (Canada)
The Alberta Lipid Utilization Program (ALUP) at the University of Alberta
seeks highly motivated doctoral graduates interested in working with soft
lipidic materials.
a. Ph.D. in Materials or Condensed Matter Physics. Experience with
theoretical and experimental aspects of X-ray diffraction a must. Modeling
experience, and experimental skills in imaging and mechanical properties would
be an asset. Fundamental knowledge of thermodynamics is essential.
b. Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry. Experience in thermodynamics and phase
behavior studies essential. A background in kinetic processes would be an
asset. Molecular modeling experience and XRD and/or NMR skills are
important. Experience with experimental methodologies in thermal properties
of materials would be important.
