This instrument is a standard laboratory grade infrared spectrometer. Most users will use it between 4000-450 cm-1, the range in which most fundamental transitions occur. It will also record up to 7800cm-1 for those who are looking for overtones.

Sample holders fit into the standard 2" wide mount in the sample chamber. A tank of nitrogen gas purges the sample compartment of atmospheric CO2 and H2O. The bottom plate of the sample compartment is removable so that cells mounted on movable carts equipped with gas lines or cryostats may "roll up" to the optical path. Sample holders and sample preparation equipment are available from numerous companies. A reliable and less expensive company which we recommend is McCarthy Scientific. If you desire IR spectra of very small samples, or IR spectral images of heterogeneous samples, consider the IR microscope.
